The trophy was inaugurated in 1938 as a prize for the winner in a handicap league competiton.

David Irons was a local ironmonger. The shop is still trading today.

The trophy was totally refurbished and resilvered in 2007 with the kind assistance of the Earl of Strathmore. The trophy was then represented to the club by the Earl in his guise as the Manager of David Irons & Sons Ironmongers.
